Context: The Prime Minister has conveyed his best wishes on the occasion of Goa Statehood Day on May 30. It is the day when Goa was declared a state separate from Daman and Diu.

Details

  • Goa is a state on the west coast of India, known for its beaches, culture and cuisine. Goa has a rich history of being ruled by different dynasties, such as the Kadambas, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Bahmani Sultanate, the Adil Shahis, the Portuguese and the Marathas.

Background

  • Goa was liberated from Portuguese colonial rule on December 19, 1961, after a military operation by the Indian Army.
  • Goa became a union territory along with Daman and Diu in 1962.
  • The people of Goa demanded full statehood for their region, as they felt that their identity and culture were not adequately represented by the central government. They also demanded more autonomy and development for their state.
  • In 1976, the Goa Assembly passed a resolution seeking statehood for Goa.
  • After a long struggle and several negotiations, the central government finally granted statehood to Goa on May 30, 1987.
  • Goa became the 25th state of India, with Daman and Diu remaining as union territories.
