Context: The Colombo Security Conclave Virtual Conference on Sharing of experiences in the investigation of terrorism cases was organised by the National Investigation Agency of India.
Participants: Panelists from India, Maldives, Mauritius, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh participated in the virtual conference.
Issues taken up for discussion:
- Challenges related to terrorism
- Strategies to deal with foreign fighters
- Countering the misuse of internet and social media
- Need for closer cooperation and coordination among member and observer countries of the Colombo Security Conclave for effective investigation and prosecution of terrorism and radicalization related cases.
About Colombo Security Conclave
- It was founded as a trilateral security frameworkbetween India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives with four pillars of security cooperation, covering marine safety and security, human trafficking, counter-terrorism, and cyber security.
- ‘CSC Focused Operation’ was aimed at keeping the vital part of the Indian Ocean safe and secure for commercial shipping, international trade and conduct of legitimate maritime activities.
- It aims to address the regional security challenges such as narco-trafficking, human trafficking, piracy, fisheries, counterterrorism and violent extremism.
- It identified key areas of cooperation to enhance and strengthen regional security in the followingfive pillars:
- Maritime Safety and Security;
- Countering Terrorism and Radicalization;
- Combating Trafficking and Transnational Organized Crime;
- Cyber Security,
- Protection of Critical Infrastructure and Technology and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.
